Gamuda, the prime contractor for the New Taipei City Government’s Department of Rapid Transit Systems (NTCG DORTS) awarded Hitachi Rail to deliver its SelTrac CBTC and SCADA solutions Taipei – Keelung MRT system.

The solutions will be deployed on the Xizhi–Donghu (Xidong) – Nangang- Badu (Keelung) MRT rail system that will connect, New Taipei City and Keelung City. The Xidong-Keelung MRT project will cover 22 km, feature 16 stations, 14 trains and one depot, and is set to play a pivotal role in the region’s urban transport network.

In 2024, a joint venture between Gamuda, MiTAC, and Dong Pi was awarded a USD 995 million turnkey design and build contract to develop Xizhi-Donghu MRT line with a length of 5.6 km long and six stations and a depot. This MRT line will connect Donghu station on the Wenhu Line to Xizhi railway station in New Taipei and is expected to become operational in 2032.

Hitachi Rail’s involvement introduces innovations to Taipei’s urban transit network. The project will deploy SelTrac™ CBTC. This technology will be equipped with the latest features including advanced communication systems, private cloud-based signalling and train control supervision, to improve overall system efficiency and reliability. Furthermore, advanced telemetry and data analytics will enhance automation and enable predictive maintenance, ensuring the future maintainability and operational excellence of the system.

This project involves the implementation of a SCADA system leveraging the product ALVEA™, offering key benefits such as modularity, scalability, maintainability, and cloud readiness. ALVEA™ enables a seamless edge-to-cloud data flow, providing operators with remote access to insights via a unified portal or operational centers, improving flexibility and responsiveness.

This new metro line is a significant addition to the Taipei – Keelung MRT system, designed to enhance connectivity and support the region’s growing urban transportation needs. The alignment will connect Taipei City and New Taipei City Xizhi District, providing a seamless transit option for commuters and reducing reliance on private vehicles. As part of New Taipei City’s substantial infrastructure initiative, the project aims to address the growing demands of the urban populace while contributing to sustainable mobility.

This contract builds on Hitachi Rail’s successful partnership with NTCG DORTS, following collaborations on Taipei’s light rail transit (LRT) projects the Circular Line and Sanying MRT lines.
