Richmond Road is a vital transport corridor connecting Blacktown and Windsor and providing access to growing residential and employment precincts across North West Sydney.

To support the region’s continued growth, the Australian and NSW governments have awarded the Gamuda Australia and DT Infrastructure joint venture the contract to design and construct the Richmond Road upgrade between the M7 Motorway and Townson Road.

The project will increase road capacity, improve traffic flow and provide safer, more reliable journeys for motorists, freight operators, pedestrians and bike riders.

Improving a Key Transport Corridor

More than 89,000 vehicles travel through the intersection of Richmond Road and Rooty Hill Road North each day. As development continues across the North West Growth Area, increasing traffic volumes are contributing to congestion, slower travel times and delays along the corridor.

The upgrade will widen Richmond Road and improve several major intersections, making it easier and safer for people to travel in and around the area.

The project’s key features include:

• Widening Richmond Road to six traffic lanes between the M7 Motorway and approximately 250 metres north of the Hollinsworth Road and Townson Road intersection.
• Constructing a new flyover connecting the M7 Motorway–Rooty Hill Road North off-ramp with northbound Richmond Road.
• Upgrading the intersection of Richmond Road, Rooty Hill Road North and the M7 Motorway ramps.
• Delivering new staged pedestrian crossings at:
  • Richmond Road, Hollinsworth Road and Townson Road.
  • Richmond Road, Langford Drive and Alderton Drive.

Delivering the Upgrade in Two Stages

Construction is being delivered in two stages to support the effective management of traffic and construction activities along this busy corridor:

• Stage 1 – Northern section: Construction commenced in late 2025 and is expected to take approximately 12 months.
• Stage 2 – Southern section: Construction is expected to commence in late 2026 and take approximately 24 months.

Once complete, the Richmond Road upgrade will:

• Ease congestion and improve travel times for all road users.
• Improve traffic flow through key intersections.
• Provide safer journeys for motorists, pedestrians and bike riders.
• Strengthen connections between established communities and new residential and employment precincts.
• Improve pedestrian and cycling safety through new staged crossings.

Building More Sustainable Infrastructure

Sustainability is integrated into the project’s design and construction, with a focus on reducing environmental impacts and creating long-term value for the community.

Key initiatives include:

• Reducing embodied carbon through design optimisation and the selection of lower-carbon materials.
• Maximising the use of recycled and sustainable construction materials where feasible.
• Improving resource efficiency through responsible waste, water and recycling practices.
• Protecting biodiversity, waterways and the surrounding environment throughout construction.

Creating Lasting Social Impact

The project is creating local jobs, training and career pathways while supporting a diverse and inclusive workforce. It is also increasing employment and procurement opportunities for Aboriginal people, local businesses, social enterprises and disability enterprises, while working with Traditional Custodians to protect cultural heritage and strengthen connection with Country.
