Beneath the vibrant and bustling streets of Kuala Lumpur lies an engineering marvel that has fundamentally reshaped the Malaysian infrastructure landscape. Conceived to solve two of the most critical dilemmas faced by modern urban centres: crippling traffic congestion and severe monsoon flooding, the SMART Tunnel took the world by storm with its groundbreaking concept.

Functioning as a vital climate mitigation lifeline since 2007, constructing this 13.2 m diameter tunnel was a formidable logistical feat. To navigate the complex geology beneath a dense metropolis, the project utilised a Slurry Mix-Shield Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), the most advanced in Southeast Asia and the second largest in Asia at the time.

The result is a seamless integration of infrastructure: a 9.7 km stormwater diversion tunnel that cleverly houses a 3 km double-decked motorway within its core. This unique, dual-purpose approach allows us to preserve the daily rhythm of the city above, keeping traffic moving during dry weather, while providing a massive subterranean reservoir to divert water during heavy tropical downpours.
