Connecting the suburbs of western Kuala Lumpur required a strategic solution to disperse traffic across the Kerinchi, Damansara and Penchala Link. The SPRINT Highway was designed to bridge these hubs through a 26.5 km dual three-lane system, navigating the city's most challenging terrain to streamline commutes for thousands of residents. The Penchala tunnels are the centrepiece of this project. Carved through 115 m of solid granite, these 700 m twin-bore tunnels were constructed using advanced drill and blast techniques. We utilised delay blasting for safety and precision, advancing 4 m per blast. To promote sustainability, the excavated granite was crushed into single-sized aggregates and reused for the highway construction, significantly reducing the project's environmental footprint.

Safety systems were advanced for the era. The tunnels feature linear heat detectors, gas sensors, and adaptive lighting to maintain air quality and visibility. We also designed three strategic cross-passages to link the tunnels, providing a safe escape route in an emergency. This project became a vital traffic dispersal scheme, setting a new standard for subsurface engineering in Malaysia. Following two decades as concessionaire, we passed stewardship of the highway to Amanat Lebuhraya Rakyat (ALR) in 2022, with SPRINT continuing to serve the Klang Valley as part of our enduring legacy.
