Connecting Communities: Sydney Metro West – Western Tunnelling Package
Sydney Metro West is a major transport project that will improve connections between Greater Parramatta and the Sydney CBD.
Gamuda Australia, in partnership with Laing O'Rourke, delivered the Western Tunnelling Package valued at AUD$2.16 billion. This included:

- Twin 9km tunnels from Sydney Olympic Park to Westmead
- Excavation and civil works for Parramatta and Westmead stations
- Tunnel portal and dive excavation at Clyde Stabling and Maintenance Facility
- Earthworks, retaining structures, drainage and utilities corridor for the Clyde Stabling and Maintenance Facility
- Excavation for a services facility and crossover structure at Rosehill.
Tunnelling Innovation
Gamuda deployed its in-house artificial intelligence software to autonomously steer, operate and monitor tunnel boring machines (TBMs) on the project.
The project's TBMs, Betty and Dorothy, achieved Australia's first autonomous TBM breakthroughs at Sydney Olympic Park in June and July 2024. Both machines completed tunnelling at Westmead in 2025, with Betty breaking through in September and Dorothy following swiftly in October.

Following the successful delivery of the Western Tunnelling Package, Gamuda was appointed by the NSW Government to deliver the Sydney Metro West – Stations Package West.
The Sydney Metro West – Western Tunnelling Package contributes to:
- Doubling rail capacity between Greater Parramatta and the Sydney CBD.
- Reducing travel times to around 20 minutes.
- Supporting the creation of more than 10,000 direct jobs and 70,000 indirect jobs across Sydney Metro West.
- Supporting the long-term growth of Western Sydney.
Following the successful delivery of the Western Tunnelling Package, Gamuda was appointed by the NSW Government to deliver the Sydney Metro West – Stations Package West.
