A Step for Sabah’s Sustainable Future

High in the rugged landscape of Tenom and Sipitang, the Ulu Padas Hydroelectric Dam (UPHEP) is a landmark project that defines Sabah’s move toward a cleaner energy future. By leveraging our deep expertise in water infrastructure, we are constructing a massive roller-compacted concrete dam designed to harness the state's natural water resources. This initiative serves as a vital component of the region’s energy strategy, significantly increasing dependable power capacity to ensure a stable and resilient supply for the population.

The development is managed through a strategic partnership with Sabah Energy Corporation and Kerjaya Kagum Hitech JV. As the project developer, Upper Padas Power Sdn Bhd oversees a comprehensive engineering scope that includes main and secondary powerhouses, a sophisticated water conveyance system, and a 275kV switchyard. To support the long-term needs of the site, the project also features permanent facilities such as a residential village, workshops, and stores. Beyond the technical build, the dam acts as a powerful socio-economic driver, sparking growth along the western coastal corridor and providing new opportunities for local communities.

Our approach is guided by a profound respect for the environment and the people who call this region home. We are actively seeking certification under the internationally recognised Hydropower Sustainability Standard, ensuring the project aligns with global best practices. This commitment involves a focus on twelve key areas, ranging from climate change mitigation and water quality to the protection of biodiversity and the rights of indigenous peoples.

This initiative is much more than a source of electricity. It is a sustainable investment in Sabah’s future that balances industrial progress with the preservation of the state’s unique natural and cultural heritage.

Floating Solar Plant

UPHEP will also include the development of a 150 MWac floating solar plant with an annual energy yield of 300 GWh, operating under a 25-year concession tenure.

Phase 1 of the Ulu Padas Water Supply Scheme

As a bolt-on project to UPHEP, Phase 1 of the Ulu Padas Water Supply Scheme (SBAUP) includes the construction of a 350 MLD water treatment plant in Beaufort, together with around 200km of water pipelines stretching along Sabah's west coast from Sipitang to Kota Kinabalu. The scope covers the design, engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning of intakes, water pipelines including pipe crossings, balancing reservoirs, water treatment plants and associated works. SBAUP is envisioned as a long-term water supply solution for Sabah's west coast, with a total planned capacity of 950 MLD to be rolled out in stages.
