Gamuda, Gentari Tie Up to Develop 1.5 Gigawatts Solar Project
Infrastructure firm Gamuda Bhd. and clean energy company Gentari Sdn Bhd. will jointly develop approximately 1.5 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity as they seek to meet power demand for hyperscale data centers in Malaysia.
The companies will develop solar photovoltaic power plants paired with battery energy storage systems, according to a joint statement on Monday. Hyperscale data centers in Malaysia are projected to require over 5 gigawatts of reliable power by 2035,underscoring the urgent need to expand renewable energy capacity to meet rising demand, they said.
The announcement comes days after Gamuda said it was teaming up with SD Guthrie Bhd. to develop, own and operate solar power assets with an accumulated target capacity of 1.2 gigawatts.
Gamuda has been a key beneficiary of Malaysia’s ambitions to become a major datacenter powerhouse. In May, it won a data-center contract worth over 1 billion ringgit ($238million) from Google’s Malaysian affiliate, according to company filings.
Gentari, meanwhile, has more than 8 gigawatts of installed and under construction renewable energy capacity across its operating markets, the statement said.
