Gamuda JV receives letter of award for Ulu Padas Hydroelectric Project’s total development contractor role

Gamuda–Conlay JV appointed Total Development Contractor for Sabah’s Ulu Padas Hydroelectric Project

Gamuda Berhad (Gamuda) is pleased to announce that Gamuda, with its joint venture (JV) partner, Conlay Construction Sdn Bhd (Conlay), has accepted a Letter of Award from Upper Padas Power Sdn Bhd (UPPSB) appointing the JV as the Total Development Contractor (TDC) for the 187.5MW Ulu Padas Hydroelectric Project in Tenom and Sipitang, Sabah.

The TDC contract sum is RM3.048 billion and will include the project’s design, construction, testing and commissioning of the following:

  • Roller-compacted concrete dam
  • A main and secondary powerhouses
  • Water conveyance system
  • Project access
  • Other permanent facilities (including a 275kV switchyard, 33kV sub-transmission line, workshop, stores and operation facilities, and a residential village)

The TDC will be undertaken by an unincorporated joint venture comprising Gamuda and Conlay, of which Gamuda and Conlay shall have 75 percent and 25 percent interests respectively.

Work is expected to begin immediately with a Scheduled Commercial Operation Date to be on or before 31st December 2030.

Upon completion, the project will deliver an average of 1,052GWh of clean energy per annum, increasing Sabah’s current dependable capacity by approximately 15 percent and double the renewable energy mix to support the state’s aim to achieve approximately 35 percent renewable energy share in its generation mix by 2035.

On 7th December 2023, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor officiated the project’s groundbreaking ceremony in Tenom, Sabah.
