Gamuda secures its biggest and seventh major Taiwan win

Gamuda Berhad (Gamuda), a regional engineering and construction group, has secured its biggest win to date with the RM4.3 billion (NTD31.96 billion) Xizhi Donghu Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) in Taiwan, marking the Group’s seventh major infrastructure project in the country.

The Department of Rapid Transit Systems, New Taipei City Government, awards the project in an unincorporated joint venture between three parties-Gamuda (75%) and two Taiwan based companies- MiTAC Information Technology Corp (15%) and Dong Pi Co Limited (10%).

With a significant 75 percent share within the joint venture, Gamuda’s share of the contract value is RM3.2 billion (NTD23.97 billion).

The design and build project is estimated to be completed within seven years, with the following scope of works:

  • 5.78km elevated viaducts and trackwork
  • Six stations (above ground)
  • System works such as rolling stock, power supply, signalling, platform screen door, communication system, central monitoring system, auto fare collection system and depot maintenance equipment

The joint venture is obligated to undertake, when instructed by the New Taipei City Government, an already determined additional works valued at RM10.8 billion (NTD 80 billion), comprising Xizhi Donghu Line Maintenance Depot and two extension lines’ System and Trackworks – the Keelung Line MRT and Minsheng Line MRT. Gamuda’s 75% share of the additional works’ contract value will be approximately RM8.1 billion (NTD60 billion). These additional works, which would be separate contracts, are expected to be awarded before the end of the Xizhi Donghu MRT contract. The total combined project value with the additional works would be approximately RM15.1 billion.

In a statement, the Group said, “This latest project is Gamuda’s biggest win since we entered the Taiwanese market two decades ago. This win showcases the Group’s consistent ability to secure high-value projects in competitive international markets. It reflects our strong track record and the trust that Taiwanese authorities have placed in our expertise and delivery capabilities.”

The project is part of a substantial infrastructure initiative currently underway in New Taipei City. The MRT is crucial in meeting the ever-growing demands of the New Taipei urban populace.

Gamuda’s success in Taiwan is built on a strong foundation, beginning with delivering the award-winning Kaohsiung MRT Orange Line in 2008 (awarded in 2002). Since then, the company has been pivotal in shaping the country’s modern transportation landscape, including the RM2.13 billion Taoyuan City Underground Railway Project in 2022 and the RM3.45 billion Kaohsiung MRT Metropolitan Yellow Line in 2023. Further demonstrating our diverse capabilities, the Group successfully completed and handed over the Guantang Marine Bridge in October 2023. The company is also delivering the Taipei Port Seawall and the 161kV Songshu to Guanfeng Underground Transmission Line.
