The Gamuda and DT Infrastructure (DTI) joint venture has been awarded the Richmond Road Upgrade contract by Transport for NSW (TfNSW).

Jointly funded by the Australian and NSW governments, the $520m Richmond Road Upgrade between M7 Motorway and Townson Road, Marsden Park is key to realising the NSW Government’s North West Growth Centre’s Road Network Strategy.

The project will deliver significant road infrastructure upgrades to ease congestion, improve traffic flow, and strengthen connectivity across north-west Sydney.

Currently, more than 89,000 vehicles use the Richmond Road and Rooty Hill Road North intersection each day, resulting in heavy congestion and slow travel times that impact communities and businesses.

Federal and State ministers announced the contract award at an event on Friday 24 October, and spoke of the importance of supporting the growing needs of the area.

“Richmond Road provides a vital link through an area of north-west Sydney that is set to undergo significant land-use and transport changes driven by rapid population growth, new housing, and expanding employment opportunities,” said the Hon. Catherine King, Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government.

“These projects build on years of planning to deliver the next tier of precinct roads that will unlock development and access new places to work and live.”

NSW Minister for Roads, the Hon. Jenny Aitchison added:
“This is an essential project to deliver at a time when the North West is growing rapidly. We need to improve the efficiency and safety of this important route, addressing traffic congestion and key access points for local suburbs.

“Richmond Road is a vital corridor for the communities in north-west Sydney that connects them to employment, commercial and education centres as well as being an evacuation route for the community living in the Hawkesbury-Nepean flood catchment.

The joint venture will deliver key civils, engineering and design services to widen the existing road with additional lanes in each direction, construct a new fly over bridge, relocate and renew pedestrian and cycle access with new infrastructure, and upgrade three major intersections.

DTI Chief Executive Officer, John Anderson, reflected on how these crucial upgrades will provide lasting benefits to the community.

“In partnership with our colleagues at Gamuda, we’re proud to be delivering critical infrastructure upgrades that will help future development in the area by improving liveability and delivering safer, more efficient travel connections,” said John.

John’s sentiments were echoed by Yew-Weng YEE, Gamuda’s Chief Executive Officer, who said:
“Guided by Gamuda and DTI’s legacy of delivering transformative infrastructure, this project represents another step in building the foundations of Sydney’s future — unlocking new opportunities for housing, employment, and connectivity in the North West Growth Area”.
